What is model routing?
Model routing is choosing, for each request, which AI model answers it, by rules such as ability, cost, speed, or which models are available at that moment.
No single model is best at everything or always available. Routing is how a system uses several without the person picking each time.
How it works
A router looks at the request, and sometimes at the conversation so far, and picks a model. Simple routers follow fixed rules: pictures go to a model that can see, long documents to one with a large context window. Others fall back in order when a model is busy or fails.
Routing can also be left to the person: an app offers several models and you choose which one answers.
Examples
- Sending a message with an image to a model that accepts images.
- Moving a request to another model when the first is rate-limited.
- Using a small, fast model for short replies and a larger one for hard problems.
Limitations
- Different models answer differently, so a routed conversation can change in tone or quality between replies.
- A router has to guess what a request needs, and can guess wrong.
- Each provider has its own terms, so routing across providers spreads your data across them.
How Venta uses it
Venta's included AI runs on more than one model. When the chosen model is busy, a request that has not started answering moves to the next included model, and a message with pictures goes to a model that can see them.
Venta's included AI runs on models from other AI companies; it is not a model Venta built. You can also connect your own account with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI or Cerebras, or any public HTTPS endpoint that speaks the OpenAI-compatible API, and choose which model answers.
Questions people ask first
- Can I choose the model myself?
- Yes. Pick a model in the chat; with your own provider key connected, you can choose that provider's models too.
- Why did a reply come from a different model?
- Usually because the chosen model was busy. Venta moves a request that has not started yet to the next included model instead of failing.
- Is model routing the same as a mixture of experts?
- No. A mixture of experts is a design inside one model. Model routing chooses between separate models.
