What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is an AI model that works toward a goal in steps, choosing and using tools such as search, files or commands along the way, instead of giving a single answer.

A chatbot replies; an agent acts and then looks at what happened. That loop is the whole idea, and it is also where most of the risk lives.

How it works

An agent runs a loop. The model reads the goal and what has happened so far, picks a tool and its inputs, and the system runs that tool. The result is added to what the model reads next, and the loop repeats until the goal is met, the agent is stuck, or a person needs to decide.

The tools define what an agent can do. An agent with only web search can research; one with a command line can change a computer. Good systems also limit how many steps an agent takes and which tools need approval.

Examples

  • A research agent that searches, opens the most relevant pages and writes a summary with sources.
  • A coding agent that reads a project, edits files and runs the tests.
  • A computer agent that finds files, runs commands and reports what changed.

Limitations

  • Each step can go wrong, and errors add up over a long task.
  • An agent can be misled by text it reads, such as instructions hidden in a web page.
  • Agents use more model calls than a single answer, so they cost more and take longer.

How Venta uses it

Every conversation in Venta can use tools: web search, reading pages and files, Venta Cloud, and the computers you link. A larger outcome can be handed to Venta's task runtime, which plans the steps, checks each one and asks before anything consequential.

You set a ceiling for what Venta may do on its own, and lower ceilings for particular tools. Purchases and deletions ask first unless you have allowed that kind of action, and a yes you give lapses on its own. Each command it runs is shown in the conversation as it happens.

Questions people ask first

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?
A chatbot answers within the conversation. An agent can also take actions with tools and use their results to decide what to do next.
Can an AI agent work without supervision?
It can run steps on its own, but a well-built system keeps a person in charge of anything that cannot be undone. In Venta, purchases and deletions ask first unless you have allowed that kind of action.
Is an AI agent the same as agentic AI?
Agentic AI is the broader idea of AI that acts toward goals; an AI agent is one concrete program that does it.
